Why termites are a bigger deal in Jamaica than most people realise
Our warm, humid climate is close to perfect for both subterranean and drywood termites β the two species doing the most damage to Jamaican homes. Most homeowners don't realise they have termites until the damage is already in the hundreds of thousands to repair.
The good news: termites give you warning signs. If you know what to look for, you can catch them early and save a lot of money.
1. Mud tubes on walls or foundation
Pencil-thick mud tunnels running up foundation walls, interior walls or crawl space supports are the number one visible sign of subterranean termites. They build these tunnels to travel between the soil (where they live) and your wood (what they eat) without drying out. If you see them, you have an active colony.
2. Hollow-sounding wood when you tap it
Termites eat wood from the inside out. The surface can look perfect while the interior is a honeycomb. Tap doorframes, skirting boards, roof timbers, structural posts and furniture with the handle of a screwdriver. If it sounds hollow where it shouldn't, that's a sign.
3. Small piles of what looks like sawdust (frass)
Drywood termites push their droppings out of small holes in the wood. The piles look like fine sawdust or coffee grounds. Common spots: window sills, under furniture, in cupboards against the wall.
4. Discarded wings near windows and doors
After a termite swarm, the winged reproductive termites shed their wings in piles β often near windows and door frames where they got in trying to find light. If you find small transparent wings in heaps, you had a swarm.
5. Doors and windows suddenly hard to open
Termite damage swells and warps wood. If a door that opened fine three months ago is suddenly sticking β and it hasn't rained β check the frame for termite activity.
6. Bubbling or peeling paint
Paint on wood that's being eaten from inside often bubbles or peels because of the moisture termites bring. Looks like water damage, but there's no water source.
7. Visible swarmers inside the house
If you see winged insects that look like flying ants inside your house β especially after rain β those are likely termite swarmers. Real ant swarmers have a narrow waist; termite swarmers have a straight body.
What to do if you spot the signs
Don't panic, but don't wait either. Termite damage compounds every month you leave it. The right steps:
- Don't spray anything yourself. Over-the-counter sprays kill the few you can see and cause the colony to split and spread to more parts of the house.
- Take photos. Mud tubes, frass, damaged wood β photos help a professional quote accurately.
- Call for a professional inspection. Most reputable Jamaican pest control companies will do a termite inspection free or at low cost.
- Get the full treatment, not a spot fix. Termites move. Treating just the visible area is a waste of money if the colony is still active elsewhere.
